Tiramisu and You….

Lino and Lina have been in Seattle, waiting until it is safe to travel back to Murano. Like so many of us, they are getting very creative with ingredients to cook with, including a Simple Cabbage Soup, Pasta with Vegetables, Lino’s Beet Jelly, Lina’s Osso Bucco, and her amazing Tiramisu! She claims, it’s not the same as if she had the right ingredients, however…. it looks amazing! Thanks for the beautiful smiles. A special thanks to Jacopo, for all you do, including this great photo!

Being in the moment…

On the experience of being an artist-in-residence, Lino Tagliapietra highlights the importance of being in the moment. He says: “in the beginning, you are rusty in the mind, the hands, and the spirit. But soon, these things begin to move in concert, you start to feel free, your mind fills with ideas and emotions, and the experiment of making the work takes off.” Lino never does drawings or sketches, saying he has no patience for it. Instead, there is a special alchemy that occurs between his mind and hands and the materials of glass and fire which cannot be predicted and for which there are no adequate words. Each work is ultimately the expression of a single indefinable thing, the extraordinary spirit of Lino Tagliapietra. As he describes it, “the idea is born, and sometimes it is very easy and sometimes it is very hard to go in a new direction and find the correct way. But the good things give you energy. Sometimes it is important to think a lot, but thinking can complicate things. Sometimes the good things are the simple things, but then sometimes the easiest things are the most difficult to do. You can have something perfect, but then you lose the spirit. Sometimes you have the spirit and sometimes you don’t. I still get so much joy from the work. It is still absolutely the best thing I know.”

LINO TAGLIAPIETRA

Lino Tagliapietra’s career is defined by a dedication to workmanship, innovation, and collaboration. For over forty-two years, Lino worked in various for-profit Murano factories including Vetreria Galliano Ferro, Venini & Co., and finally as the Artistic and Technical Director of Effetre International (1976-1989). Tagliapietra has been an independent artist since 1989, exhibiting in museums around the globe, receiving countless honors, openly sharing his far-reaching knowledge of the medium and his skill as one of its finest practitioners, and helping to create a new renaissance in studio glassmaking.
