Martin Blank Architectural Installations

Whether it is a collection of flower blossoms, a monumental abstract installation, or a figurative sculpture, Martin Blank’s hot sculpted glass is made with a combination of technical exactitude and creative exuberance.  His working relationship with glass is an intimate one, as he wears heat protective clothing, gets very close, and employs his entire body while molding the molten material.  Intuitive and deliberate, he is nonetheless open to enhancing his visual vocabulary with the happy accidents of glasswork.

Crafting the individual segments (like the petals for a flower or the elements of an abstract installation) is the first of two equally important steps towards a completed work.  Next, pieces are juxtaposed and negative space is carved out, resulting in an endless interplay and spatial tension that Blank calls “visual mirroring.”  Martin Blank’s sculptures reveal nature’s inherent structure and celebrate the complementary relationship of natural and figurative objects in space.  His 15 feet high, 210 feet long installation Fluent Steps (2008-9), at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, WA, is made of 754 individually hand-sculpted pieces of glass created mostly during the artist’s 2008 residency at the museum.  It required a team of over 40 artists, architects, and engineers to create and install and pays homage to water in its various incarnations.

James Carpenter Architectural Installations

James Carpenter brings over 40 years of experience and a rare synthesis of skills to the intersection of art, engineering, and the built environment. Born in Washington D.C. and raised in New England, Carpenter graduated with a degree from Rhode Island School of Design in 1972. He was also a Loeb Fellow at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. He planned to study architecture at RISD but discovered the sculpture studio and the work of glass artist Dale Chihuly, then a teacher there. Chihuly and Carpenter collaborated on a series of neon-light sculptures, and Carpenter also went on to teach at RISD. Carpenter continued making light-based installations while also serving as a consultant at Corning Glass, where he developed new glass materials including photo-responsive glasses and glass ceramics for architectural applications. Carpenter’s art installations drew the attention of architect Edward Larrabee Barnes, who later commissioned him to create a foundational work for the Christian Theological Seminary chapel. In 1979, Carpenter established James Carpenter Design Associates (JCDA), as cross-disciplinary firm working on large-scale art, architecture, and engineering projects.

Daniel Clayman Architectural Installations

I am in contact with my work everyday. Most days I come to the studio as the "working artist." Other days I come as an observer, to see what the "artist" is doing. The work is a continual, always evolving exploration of simple forms.

Using a vocabulary of extremely simple forms whose scale ranges from three to nine feet; these objects describe volumes in space. Some of the pieces are easily identifiable as vessels and may allude to holding volumes of water. Others are pure abstraction holding only quantities of air and space. By taking away any real solid mass, I am left with just the skins of glass, bronze or graphite that define a measure of capacity. Other objects are identifiable as a ramp ("PLANE") that divides space with a simple line or as a wheel ("CIRCULAR OBJECT ONE") that makes the center volume of air as important as the white structure itself.

Dan Dailey Architectural Installations

American visual artist Dan Dailey has simultaneously produced sculpture and functional art with an emphasis on lighting since 1970. It is the thematic pursuit of portraying human and animal nature, combined with a long held interest in creating functional art, that most clearly defines his work as an artist. Every piece of work begins with a drawing, and proceed with “an industrial palette”, consisting largely of glass and metal. Dailey’s drawings and the objects they inspire depict human character and the world we inhabit, with many familiar forms rendered iconic. Dailey’s myriad series explore extraordinary concepts with a broad range of themes and styles. These attributes and over forty years of achievement and recognition have made Dan Dailey a prominent artist in the history of glass, and unique among American artists.

Albert Paley Architectural Installations

Albert Paley, an active artist for over 40 years at his studio in Rochester, New York, is the first metal sculptor to receive the coveted Institute Honors awarded by the American Institute of Architects, the AIA’s highest award to a nonarchitect. “The allure of Paley’s art comes through its intrinsic sense of integration of art and architecture,” as one noted architect stated. Paley, Distinguished Professor, holds an Endowed Chair at the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences at Rochester Institute of Technology.

Commissioned by both public institutions and private corporations, Paley has completed more than 50 site-specific works. Some notable examples are the Portal Gates for the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC, Synergy, a ceremonial archway in Philadelphia, the Portal Gates for the New York State Senate Chambers in Albany, Sentinel, a monumental plaza sculpture for Rochester Institute of Technology, as well as a 65-foot sculpture for the entry court of Bausch and Lomb’s headquarters in Rochester, NY. Recently completed works include three sculptures for the National Harbor development near Washington DC, a 130’ long archway named Animals Always for the St. Louis Zoo, a gate for the Cleveland Botanical Gardens in Cleveland, OH, a sculptural relief for Wellington Place, Toronto, Canada, Threshold, a sculpture for the Corporate Headquarters of Klein Steel, Rochester, NY, and Transformation, a ceremonial entranceway for Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.

Pieces by Albert Paley can be found in the permanent collections of many major museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Broadly published and an international lecturer, Paley received both his BFA and MFA from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. He received honorary doctorates from the University of Rochester in 1989, the State University of New York at Brockport in 1996, St. Lawrence University, in Canton, NY in 1997, and the University of Gothenburg, in Sweden in 2012.

Lino Tagliapietra Architectural Installations

Lino Tagliapietra’s career is defined by a dedication to workmanship, innovation, and collaboration. Born in 1934 on the renowned glass-blowing island of Murano, Italy, Tagliapietra began his apprenticeship at age 11 with Muranese master Archimede Seguso from whom Tagliapietra achieved the status of Maestro Vetraio by the age of 21. For over forty-two years, Lino worked in various for-profit Murano factories including Vetreria Galliano Ferro, Venini & Co., and finally as the Artistic and Technical Director of Effetre International (1976-1989). Tagliapietra has been an independent artist since 1989, exhibiting in museums around the globe, receiving countless honors, openly sharing his far-reaching knowledge of the medium and his skill as one of its finest practitioners, and helping to create a new renaissance in studio glassmaking. As the late James Yood, adjunct professor of art history at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and former contributor to GLASS magazine wrote, “there are probably no two words more respected and honored in the history of modern sculpture in glass than ‘Lino Tagliapietra’; he is the living bridge, the crucial link between the august history of Venetian glass and the ceaseless wonders of what today we call the modern Studio Glass Movement”, (to read more of this essay, refer to Dalle Mani del Maestro, Lino Tagliapietra.)
